Build vs buy · US retail + FSMA 204

A QR is easy. The resolver is where DIY breaks.

Your buyers want a GS1 Digital Link on every SKU. You can roll your own — but a QR is just pixels; the value is the resolver behind it, and that is a full engineering programme. Here is the honest side-by-side, with the numbers.

This is what a DIY static QR cannot do — one link, three governed views. Tap to switch.

Scan it — then try to do this with a free generator.

This is a real, live GS1 Digital Link. Point your camera and an example live product record opens on your device — the same resolver behind the three-audience demo above. A basic QR tool can only ever point at one fixed page — it cannot look at who is scanning and route them. Open it right here:

GS1 Sunrise 2027 · USA
The retail upgrade every US brand is about to feel — already switched on.

By the end of 2027, US checkouts read 2D barcodes (QR & GS1 DataMatrix), turning the code on every pack into a doorway to a live product record. We built that upgrade — for every product category, every brand and every retailer.

Why do-it-yourself breaks

Three steps. The third is a platform.

The first is unavoidable and stays yours. The second is fiddly. The third — the resolver — is where most brands underestimate the work by an order of magnitude.

1

GS1 membership + GTIN

You must be a licensed GS1 member to own legal Global Trade Item Numbers. Unavoidable, and it stays yours — DSR builds on it, it does not replace it.

2

Digital Link URI syntax

Structure a compliant URI with Application Identifiers (/01/{GTIN}/10/{batch}/21/{serial}). Get a check-digit or AI wrong and scanners and registries reject it.

3

Resolver + content negotiation the bottleneck

A static server cannot look at who is scanning and route shopper vs retailer vs auditor. Add immutable audit trails, two-year FSMA 204 retention, multi-tenant access control, permanence and uptime — months to build, forever to run.

Side by side

Three ways to get a link. Only one is compliant.

Every option can print a QR. Only DSR gives you the enterprise resolver, governance and audit trail the mandates actually require.

Compliant Digital Link syntax
×Static pixels; no AI logic
~Hand-built & validated by you
✓Generated & validated automatically
Content negotiation (one link → three views)
×Impossible — one fixed target
×Build the routing engine yourself
✓Shopper, retailer & auditor out of the box
Immutable audit trail & 2-yr retention
×None
~Design, build & certify it
✓Tamper-evident, retained by default
Multi-tenant access control
×None
~Your ongoing security burden
✓Tenant-isolated, zero-egress
Rides on existing GS1 / EDI
×Disconnected from your stack
~You integrate it
✓Sits on top — no disruption
Time to first compliant scan
~Minutes — but non-compliant
×Many months of engineering
✓Days — onboarding, not building

Cost and effort figures are illustrative planning estimates to frame the build-vs-buy decision — adjust them to your own rates and scope. A GS1 Company Prefix and GTINs are issued by GS1 to its members and remain yours; DSR is the resolver and identity layer on top, not a barcode, GDSN or EDI provider.

Not a single-purpose tool

Powered by the same universal engine.

The resolver you would spend months building is what DSR is — the same GS1 Digital Link engine behind the whole platform. Start with US retail and FSMA 204; grow into EU Digital Product Passports, NFC anti-counterfeit and richer consumer engagement, on the same one link.

Don’t build a resolver. Switch one on.

Book a 20-minute demo and we’ll resolve a live product record — shopper, retailer and auditor from one link — on a SKU like yours, and size the build you avoid.

DSR Protocol is a software platform. “Free / entry-tier” refers to basic QR generators and URL shorteners that produce static or hard-coded redirects. Retailer requirements differ by programme and change over time; Walmart’s GS1 and traceability requirements are well established and other grocers are moving the same way — confirm each buyer’s current specification. FSMA 204’s compliance date (20 July 2028) and requirements are from public 2026 FDA sources. Cost figures are illustrative planning estimates. This is a positioning overview, not legal advice.
